The Way of Jodo Shinshu
Reflections on the Hymns of Shinran Shonin

About 'The Way of Jodo Shinshu'

This website (formerly Notes on the Nembutsu) commenced its life some twenty years ago as a series of essays, which explore the hymns of Shinran (1173-1263).

The hymns of Shinran give a full account of the way of Jodo Shinshu and are sung at daily observances. Sometimes they are used to provide the theme of dharma talks or lectures, as they are for the essays here.

The content and build of this website is currently under review to ensure greater accuracy and accessibility.

Caveat: Readers should understand that these essays are not scholarly commentary. They are a personal account of the exhilarating teaching of Shinran, especially as it is expressed in his hymns.
